What to look for

When choosing a speech-language pathologist (or SaLT in the UK), a few things worth checking:

  • Credentials: Look for a licensed or registered speech-language pathologist (SLP) — known as a Speech and Language Therapist (SaLT) in the UK and Ireland. Licensing requirements vary by country but an SLP should be able to tell you their registration body.
  • Experience with young children: Paediatric SLP is a specialism. Ask about their experience with children in your child’s age range.
  • Familiarity with your child’s profile: If your child is autistic, or you suspect gestalt language processing, it’s worth asking whether the SLP has experience in those areas.
  • AAC experience: If your child is minimally verbal, an SLP familiar with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) may be particularly helpful.

While you wait

If you’re on a waiting list — particularly common in NHS and Canadian public systems — the at-home strategies on this site are designed to be used by parents and carers right now, without specialist training.
